Doujin Review - Room Mates

Review by Miyu.

There's no hard-and-fast rule that says doujinshi can only be created by Japanese creators, nor that they must be black-and-white and specifically Japanese. The Sheepish Dreams staff are multicultural, and the influence of anime and hentai in the global NSFW space is undeniable, creating thousands, if not millions, of non-Japanese hentai artists. It's no surprise, then, that full 18+, doujin-style comics from Western creators also exist, and today, we're taking a look at Norasuko's Room Mates, available via FAKKU! without a subscription.

Norasuko's Room Mates is a fun, flirty romp between two girls, filled with some excellent staples of yuri hentai, along with some cheeky roleplay, erotic positions, and a wholesome ending—all in glorious full-color. Let's get into the review!

Overview of Room Mates by Norasuko

There's no complicated premise or setup in Room Mates—just our titular cast members: the buxom blonde Miranda, and her roommate/lesbian lover, the black-haired Robbie. The power dynamic initially introduced suggests that, outside the bedroom play, Robbie calls the shots, especially with her combative attitude to nerds online. But when it comes time for the sexy action, it turns out Robbie's got a mommy kink that only Miranda's milkers can fill!

The chemistry between the pair is delightful, an excellent combination of playful, cheeky, and passionate. Having a mommy kink on display makes for a nice change compared to some more "equal role" yuri doujins.

The Art of Room Mates

The biggest drawcard of Room Mates is (aside from filling your yuri desires) clearly the full-color artwork. Norasuko's coloring is fantastic, with gorgeous highlights, shading, and blush. The background scenes feature an intriguing and inspired color palette of purple and green that's soft on the eyes and never distracting.

Many full-color artists make the mistake of overcomplicating when they step into the world of comics or doujins, overworking hair and eye details to compete with the complexity of monochrome works, without realizing the cognitive load it places on the eye. Norasuko's reserved approach to Miranda and Robbie's designs allows for more panels and sex positions, making the read more enjoyable overall.

All that said, we would have liked a little more oomph in some of the scenes. The lack of SFX is unconventional, even among Western creators, and despite the characters repeatedly mentioning summer heat, there's barely any sweat on their bodies. We prefer our sex on the wetter side, so perhaps that's just a personal preference.

Final Thoughts of Room Mates

Ultimately, for a completely free read, this feels like a steal. Norasuko offers multiple ways to support them via their Patreon and (for now) their Itch.io, if you feel Room Mates is deserving of a few dollars. You can also follow them on X and BSky to track their latest works!

Frustratingly, because FAKKU! is designed primarily with doujins in mind, although Room Mates is intended to be read left-to-right in Western order, it's instead been uploaded in right-to-left order, which, when using two-page view in a web browser, is a slight headache. This isn't Norasuko's fault, but it does frustrate the reading experience—try single-page mode or your phone instead.

Overall, Sheepish Dreams gives Room Mates by Norasuko 4/5 stars. You can read the comic for free via FAKKU!, without a subscription.
